Forming Technology and Applications of PTFE Rods

PTFE rods are suitable for processing various gaskets, seals, and lubricating materials that work in corrosive media, as well as electrical insulation parts used at various frequencies. These rods are formed from unfilled PTFE resin through molding, paste extrusion, or plunger extrusion processes.


Molding Technology


PTFE Push-Rod


Push molding, also known as extrusion molding, involves continuously pushing PTFE into the mold opening. The powder is compacted by a hydraulic press and pushed deeper into the mold cavity, where it melts, sinters, and cools to shape, and is then pushed out from the other end of the mold cavity, forming a continuous tube or rod.


PTFE Extruded Rod


An alternative molding method for PTFE is paste extrusion molding, commonly used for dispersed PTFE. This process involves mixing PTFE with a solvent to form a paste, which is extruded under pressure from the mold opening to form continuous tubes, rods, or other shapes. These can also be used to coat wires, and the extruded tubes or rods are sintered to form the final product.


PTFE Molded Rod


Molding, also known as compression molding, involves filling a mold with PTFE material and applying pressure to compress the powder into the desired shape. This method is commonly used to press tubes, rods, plates, discs, gaskets, film blanks, and other special-shaped parts requiring pipe linings. Isostatic molding is a special form of compression molding for shaped parts, typically using a metal outer mold and a bladder inner mold. PTFE powder is filled between the inner and outer molds, and pressure is applied to compact the powder into shape.


Application Fields


PTFE is widely used in industries such as atomic energy, defense, aerospace, electronics, chemicals, machinery, instruments, construction, textiles, metal surface treatment, pharmaceuticals, medical, textiles, food, and metallurgy. It serves as a high-temperature resistant, corrosion-resistant material, insulating material, and non-stick coating, making it an irreplaceable product.


Corrosion-Resistant Material


PTFE rod material overcomes the non-corrosion-resistant shortcomings of ordinary plastics and metals, making it the primary corrosion-resistant material in the petroleum, chemical, and textile industries. It is used to manufacture pipes for conveying corrosive gases, exhaust pipes, steam pipes, etc.


Oil-Free Lubricating Material


With its very low coefficient of friction, PTFE rod becomes the best material for oil-free lubrication in mechanical equipment parts. In fields such as paper, food, textiles, etc., where adding lubricating oil could contaminate products, PTFE rod resolves this issue.


Electronic Equipment Material


PTFE bar's inherent low loss and dielectric constant make it an ideal insulating material for wires and cables. Its porous structure minimizes loss and distortion, while also providing thermal stability and a certain degree of flexibility.


Non-Stick Material


PTFE rod, with its inherently minimal surface tension, does not adhere to any substances. Additionally, it has excellent high and low-temperature resistance and is non-toxic, making it the best material for non-stick applications.


Medical Material


PTFE rod's excellent mechanical properties, durability, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility make it non-reactive to body tissues and physiologically safe, without side effects. Its multi-porous structure is increasingly used in medical applications, including artificial blood vessels and patches for soft tissue regeneration, as well as surgical sutures in vascular, cardiac, general, and plastic surgery.
